Adsorption of Melted Drugs onto Smectite

چکیده
Montmorillonite, a 2:1 clay mineral, is known to accommodate different organic substances within its interlayer space to form intercalation compounds, which have received much attention because of their stability and physicochemical properties. Its use as a drug carrier is widely studied, as the location of the drug molecules within the interlayer space of the clay may modify the suitability of some drugs for biological use (Grim 1962; Theng 1974; Grim and Gtiven 1978; Porubcan et al. 1979; Browne et al. 1980; Hermosfn et al. 1981; White and Hem 1983; Forteza et al. 1989). Usually, intercalation is achieved by adsorption from aqueous solutions of the drug, but some authors have recently reported on alternative methods that are faster, cleaner and cheaper, such as mechanically grinding a mixture of the drug and the clay (Vicente et al. 1989; Ogawa et al. 1989, 1990a, 1990b, 1991). Bujdfik and Slosiarikov~ (1992) have reported intercalation of octadecylamine into montmorillonite by solid state reaction. Further intercalation was observed after melting of octadecylamine, but was followed with partial decomposition. We report intercalation of two different drugs, currently used as sunburn protectors, into the interlayer space of montmorillonite by melting, without any decomposition.

Mineral surface control of organic carbon in black shale.
We show that 85% of variation in total organic carbon can be explained by mineral surface area in a black shale deposit from two locations in the late Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway, United States. This relation suggests that, as in modern marine sediments, adsorption of carbon compounds onto clay mineral surfaces played a fundamental role in the burial and preservation of organic carbon. O...
متن کاملEffective Removal of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solution Using Nano Illite/Smectite Clay: Isotherm, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Modeling of Adsorption
Illite-smectite clay is a new mixed mineral of illite and montmorillonite. The ability of nano illite/smectite clay to remove Pb(II) from slightly polluted aqueous solutions has been investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial concentration of Pb(II), nano illite/smectite clay dosage, and temperature on the adsorption process were studied. The nano illite/smectite clay was characteri...
متن کاملAdsorption of poly(ethylene oxide) on smectite: Effect of layer charge.
The adsorption of polymers on clay is important in many applications. However the mechanisms of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) adsorption on smectite is not well elucidated at present. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of layer charge density on the adsorption of PEO by smectite. The results indicated that both the hydrophobic interaction (between CH(2)CH(2) groups and siloxane su...
متن کاملConstraining clay hydration state and its role in active fault systems
[1] To understand the role of hydrated clay minerals in active fault systems, a humidity chamber connected to an X-ray diffractometer was used to determine the adsorption of water onto and/or into the crystal structure of smectite. This new type of analysis was carried out under specific temperature and humidity conditions, using powdered clay size fractions (< 2 mm) of rock samples from the Sa...
متن کاملDetermination of the surface area of smectite in water by ethylene oxide chain adsorption.
This study investigates the feasibility of using ethylene oxide (EO) chain adsorption to determine the surface area of smectite in water. Experimental results indicate that high-molecular-weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) should be used to provide reasonable estimations for monolayer capacity of PEO on smectite. The surface areas of smectites in water are calculated from the monolayer capacity ...
